The 2nd Annual “Cast Away Cancer” fishing tournament was held on June 4 at the Nanticoke Harbor, Maryland. Hosted by Chris Remo, 21st Century Oncology Regional Administrator, along with dedicated volunteers Fred Morton, Anita Mulchay, Sandy Miller, Jeanette Jones, Bonnie and Gary Lucks, Jill and Rebecca McGuire, Lindsay Borow, Becky Smith and Shirley Wolack. This day started out beautiful as the fishermen (and women) boarded their boats and headed out into the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries to catch and claim a winning fish. With cash prizes awarded for the biggest Rock, Blue, Hardhead and Perch, there was plenty of incentive to get out there early! Door prizes, tournament t-shirts, and a chance drawing of a Coleman Shore Lunch Fishing Package rounded out the event. Mike Parker, the WBOC-TV Outdoors Sportscaster was on hand for the second year filming our tournament. The Big Fish Winners were Robbie Noble, Brian Wolfe and Tom Lowe.
The tournament raised almost $1,500 for cancer patients! As always, funds raised will be returned to the area in the form of patient financial assistance and other programs to benefit cancer patients. We will be looking forward to next year’s tournament!

March 27, 2011 dawned hot and humid, but that didn’t stop more than 60 cars, motorcycles, and trucks from pulling into the parking lot of 21st Century Oncology’s Headquarters in Fort Myers, FL for the 1st Annual “Cruisin’ for CARE” show. D.J. “Tommy Tunes” provided entertainment by playing some “oldies” while the expert panel of judges inspected each vehicle. Food vendors provided an assortment of nourishment, but by far the favorite was Dairy Queen, whose ice cream provided much-needed relief from the heat. There was a wide variety of streetrods, muscle cars and antique vehicles for bystanders to admire. The entries ranged from late model cars like a 2010 Dodge Challenger to a 1937 Packard Roadster. There was even an antique fire truck. Door prizes and chance drawing prizes were given out throughout the day, culminating in a lucky contestant winning a Richard Petty driving experience in Orlando! A beautifully restored 1955 Ford Crown Victoria won Best of Show and Ladies Choice awards. In the motorcycle category, Best of Show went to a restored 1969 Harley Davidson Ironhead. Spectators were also able to get involved by voting for their favorite vehicle with the People’s Choice award, that award going to a classically restored 1955 Chevy Bel Air. A good time was had by all involved and plans are already underway for next year’s show.
On March 26, 2011, we held the first annual “Get Your Rear in Gear” 5K run, 2-mile walk and kids’ fun run at Hammond Stadium (home of the Minnesota Twins’ spring training) in Fort Myers, Florida. Get Your Rear in Gear is a nationwide program of the Colon Cancer Coalition, with 40 events around the country to be held in 2011. Get Your Rear in Gear promotes awareness, raises funds and supports those whose lives have been affected by colon cancer. Our event was a huge success! Considering this was 21st Century C.A.R.E.’s first 5K run, we were very pleased with the turnout of 339 runners. Next year, our goal is 500 runners!
The idea for a 5K run in Fort Myers came about when Vera Owens was diagnosed with colon cancer. Vera’s mother died of colon cancer, and Vera knew she was at high risk for the disease as well. She had been getting screening colonoscopies every two years, when in 2009 a cancerous tumor was found. She was referred to Dr. Janette Gaw, a board-certified colorectal surgeon with the Colorectal Institute in Fort Myers. Luckily, the cancer was caught early, and after having surgery Vera didn’t need chemotherapy or any other kind of further treatment. During her visits with Dr. Gaw, Vera discovered that she and Dr. Gaw had something in common: both are avid runners. During a conversation in the hallway with Dr. Gaw one day, Vera mentioned to her that she would like to do something to help other colon cancer patients, and the idea for a run was born. Dr. Gaw eagerly agreed to participate as Event Chairperson, saying “I can do both things I love to do: cure colon cancer and run”.
Since both Dr. Gaw and Vera know firsthand the value of screening for colorectal cancer, they wanted the funds raised to be used to educate people about colorectal cancer screening and to provide free screenings and follow up care to people in Southwest Florida who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford such care. Most of all, Vera and Dr. Gaw want to use their experiences to help save lives in the local community. With the help of numerous volunteers, generous sponsors, and a lot of work by Vera, her husband David, and Dr. Gaw we will be able to meet this goal in Southwest Florida, having raised more than $35,000!
By the way, you can see Vera featured as an “amazing runner fighting cancer” in the July 2011 issue of Runner’s World magazine!
Less than 3 months after her surgery, Vera was running again, and successfully completed her first marathon since her diagnosis.

Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson fires the starting gun and the runners are off!
Dr. Gaw, event Chairperson, does double duty as emcee.

On Saturday night, March 13, 2010, at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples, Florida, we came together to host a fun and exciting Las Vegas style Casino Night, with dinner, dancing, and of course, “gambling”. Popular and high energy entertainment was provided throughout the evening by Double Dare.
With the help of our generous sponsors, more than 230 guests, and our exceptional volunteers, we raised over $178,000 for cancer patients in Lee and Collier counties! Funds raised at this event will be used to grant immediate financial assistance to cancer patients in need, within both counties.

A perfect day and a beautiful golf course greeted us on May 17th, 2009 as the 2nd Annual Swings Against Cancer Golf Tournament got underway. The Club at Renaissance provided us with a wonderful breakfast and lunch, great golf and a course that was spectacular! Over 60 players, 12 volunteers and the Renaissance staff made this an event to remember. These dedicated individuals helped to raise over $29,000.
After an energetic round of golf, Rabbi Solomon Agin opened the luncheon with a synopsis of 21st Century C.A.R.E., the event and introduced Craig Wolf, Senior Anchor of NBC-2 as our emcee for the day. Craig had also joined us on the greens. He awarded the 1st place trophy which also included a 4 day 3 night vacation package. 2nd place golfers received a 3 day 2 night vacation package. Dr. Valerie Dyke of The Colorectal Institute made the awards for the Longest Drive Contest. Other award contest winners received a 5 day Carnival Cruise for 2 (Putting Contest), 2 tickets to a Pro sporting event (for men) and a gift certificate to Diamond District (for women) in the Closest to the Pin contest.
Buddy and Tonya Roberts from RC Media Services have provided us with photos to capture memorable moments of the day. Just follow the link and enjoy!
Mark your calendars! May 16th, 2010 = 3rd Annual Swings Against Cancer
21st Century C.A.R.E. in conjunction with the Southwest Florida Coalition for Change sponsored a health fair in east Lee country at Grace Church on June 20. The event brought together over 20 agencies which offered blood pressure testing, osteoporosis screening, stop smoking assistance, and much more. Physicians from Associates in Dermatology offered free skin cancer screenings, and financial advisors were available to help people apply for Medicaid. Many social service agencies were on hand to answer questions and take applications, including the United Way, Lee County Health Department, Visually Impaired Persons, and Family Health Centers. Over 2,500 pounds of emergency food from the Harry Chapin food Bank was distributed to help with southwest Florida’s hunger crisis. Professional hair cuts were donated by Planet Hair, and the Lee Memorial Hospital Blood Mobile left with many extra pints. With around 150 attendees, more than 35 volunteers, lots of door prizes, food, and helpful information, the event was quite a success!
